Grade 5 Curriculum
In 5th grade we have a fun, exciting and rigorous curriculum. Below you will find an overview of what we will be covering in each subject.
Students will be building upon what they learned in fourth grade. We will be focusing on multiplication, division, fractions, decimals, and geometry. We will take a lot of these topics to new and exciting levels.
English Language Arts
Our writing curriculum consists of three main units. In the units we'll learn how to write a literary essay, a research based argument essay, and an informational essay. We will focus on evidence based writing which includes citing and explaining all of our sources.
The 5th grade reading curriculum also consists of three main units. We have a Fantasy unit where we'll read "The Thief of Always" by Clive Barker. We'll also learn about Bud Caldwell in "Bud Not Buddy" by Christopher Paul Curtis. We will also do a non fiction unit on slavery.
Our students will be focusing on three specific areas of science . The units are Living Systems (taught by Ms. Ribeiro), Mixtures and Solutions (taught by Ms. Merson), and Earth and Sun (taught by Mr. Jackson). Our class will start the year off with Mr. Jackson, studying the Earth and Sun.
In 5th grade social studies we focus on America's past. We learn about Native Americans, early colonial settlements, the American Revolution, and U.S Government, past and present.
